Energy Efficient Renovations

Saving energy and being more ecofriendly isn't usually on the list of top reasons that homeowners remodel. However, if you were already motivated to renovate your home in the near future, in the long run it would be worth adding energy saving ideas to your renovation list.  Becoming ecofriendly or simply saving energy sounds like it would be a lot of worth and a huge expense, however, it does not have to be or break your bank, and in the long run it will save you money on your home's energy bill, and make your home more self-sustaining.

Try these Energy Efficient Renovation Tips

1. (Before the Project) Check your home for water intrusion, condensation, and moisture

Fixing any issues related to unwanted water and moisture will improve the air quality in your home, and decrease the chance of mold growth.

2. When adding walls, use the least amount of framing allowed by the building code

Using less lumber will not only save you money while renovating, in addition it will also save more room for insulation which will in turn make your home more energy efficient.

3. Opt in for a single low-flow Shower head

Opting for a low-flow shower head doesn't seem as glamorous as multiple shower heads with various flow levels, but in the end,  this will help save on your water bill and is just overall more ecofriendly.

4. Add new HVAC ducts or insulate the Current Ducts

If possible add new HVAC ducts to heated and cooled areas of your home instead of a space such as the attic. If you cannot replace and rework the ducts, insulate around the pre-existing ones.

5. Insulate around recessed lighting

Adding insulation around recessed lighting where the lighting protrudes into non- insulated area will block air leaks, and you will in turn waste less heating and cooling your home.

6. Invest in High-Efficiency or Solar Water Heaters

If you are wasting water, you are wasting energy. To avoid this invest in high-efficiency or solar water heaters, and insulate your water pipes.

7. Invest in an automatic humidistat for your bathroom fans

When the moisture in the air rises, the automatic humidistat will turn on the bathroom fan, which will reduce the chance of mold growth in your bathrooms.
